Franke Open Pit Copper Mine Ore

Located in the Atacama Desert of Northern Chile near the coastal city of Taltal

Specimen # 3000

7 x 8 10 cm       1406 grams

$100

This rectangular specimen is a block of ore from the Franke ore body

which is copper oxides which becomes sulfides with depth.

Ore here is usually black from atacamite (a copper chloride hydroxide); it also contains

copper, hematite, iron, magnetite and/or chalcocite.  This ore is unique in that it contains gray,

elongate flecks as found in this specimen.  In bright light, some of the flecks appear shiny or silver.

But the fleck contain not silver, but REE's including yttrium oxide.

This specimen has been sawed on two sides for better exposure of the ore

Franke Mine Ore

Specimen # 3000

Here is one cut side showing the flecks and occasional malachite in the black atacamite and numerous spaces.

On the very left side you can see the other flat cut side show in the image below.

Any true white specks you find are gypsum.

Franke Mine Ore

Specimen # 3000

Here is another view of the side above with a different light source.

Franke Mine Ore

Specimen # 3000

Here is a natural, uncut, side showing more malachite

and/or the beginning of green atacamite.

Franke Mine Ore

Specimen # 3000

Here is the second cut side with a good light source.  There is more malachite seen here.  In some specimens I have seen

there is also blue which indicates chrysocolla and/or azurite, but not on this particular specimen.  You might wonder where the

brilliant green atacamite with brilliant flower-like crystalline structures. They are 17 km to the north of this mine at the

Chuquicamata Mine.  I will post ore samples from there shortly.

Franke Mine Ore

Specimen # 3001

2.5 x 4 x 13 cm      212 gm

$ 90

This is typical of some ore found at other areas at this mine with copper, hematite,

magnetite and chalcocite with malachite.

Franke Mine Ore

Specimen # 3001

Another view in taken in sunshine.

The other two jpegs above and below are closer to the exact view.

Franke Mine Ore

Specimen # 3001

This is the view of the other side of this specimen.

I am only showing sections of this specimen as it is difficult to get close-ups on items 13cm long.

Franke Mine Ore

Specimen # 3002

5 x 8 3.5 cm             317 grams

$140

This specimen is probably what most of us expect to see from copper mines.

This jpeg is of one sawed faces of this specimen.  The back side is a flat sawed face also.

Click on the rock to increase its size x 4.  The camera picks up structures and pattern not visible to the naked eye.

I do not know what the yellow dots are on the left side of the specimen.  Looking at the rock its self it is not there.

Franke Mine Ore

Specimen # 3002

This is a side view of the ore sample.

This specimen has a large number of cracks through its matrix, but it sturdy and will hold together for you.

Franke Mine Ore

Specimen # 3002

Another view  showing the breakage pattern when the was removed somewhere in the web.

It broke apart forming a finger-like structure.

This green atacamite with copper, hematite, magnatite and/or chalcocite.  The blue, rather than green areas, are chrysocolla and/or azurite.

Franke Mine Ore

Specimen # 3003

This side of the specimen is entirely blue, and is quite attractive.
